Vista Wireless Connection

1. Click on the Network Icon at the bottom right hand corner of the desktop.




2.  A box will appear to show that it's not connected and Windows has found some wireless networks. Click on Connect to a network.




3.  A new dialog box will appear. It will show the list of SSID that is found around the area.  It also shows if the network is secured and its wireless signal strength.




4. Highlight to see the SSID properties. Double click or click on the Connect button to get connected.




5.  This screen shows that is trying to connect to the SSID network.

 


6. If the SSID that you are connecting to is a secured connection,  the dialog box will prompt you to enter the Network Key. Click on Display characters to show what you are typing in the box. The key length for WEP keys are as follows.
HEX (0-9 & A-F) = 64bit, 10 characters long or 128bit,  26 characters long.
ASCII  (0-9 & A-Z) = 64bit, 5 characters long or 128bit, 13 characters long.




7. If the key you entered is not according to the desired length and you try to connect, it will show you an error as below.




8.  After entering the correct WEP key, It will then try to connect to the SSID network.




9.  When you enter the right WEP key, and the authentication is successfull, this screen will appear. Choose "Save this network" to save this connection so that its editable later at  Network and Sharing Centre - Manage Wireless Networks. By clicking on "Start this connection automatically", Windows will connect to this SSID whenever it is in range.




10.  Now the Network icon at the bottom right hand corner of the screen shows that you are connected the the Wireless SSID and is able to surf the internet.
